  • This paper examines the causes of surface damage to the secondary superheater tube in a Power Plant in the form of tube wall thinning. The tube has been in operation for approximately ten years. The tube has not been replaced because it is rated for approximately 30 years of operation. The tube is made of ASTM SA-213-T12 steel. A section of the tube was discovered to have thinning on the outer surface. On the superheater tube, failure analysis is performed, which includes visual inspection, metallurgical analysis, mechanical and thermal analysis, as well as simulations to support the failure process of the superheater tube. The results indicate that no tube damage has occurred as a result of plastic deformation or thermal effect. Damage to the tube's outer surface in the form of thinning occurs as a result of erosion caused by the soot blowing process used to remove fly ash deposits attached to the tube's outer surface
