  • Writing is considered to be a difficult skill among the four skills involved in a language. The writer herself has informally observed and interviewed some of her friends, the students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University. Based on her observation and interview there is a difficulty in writing class. The difficulty is concerned with arranging the ideas in composition. The writer has found out that one of the causes of the problem is that, in writing, students do not know the importance of using outline in writing. Realizing the facts described above, the writer attempts to suggest one technique in teaching writing, this is outlining. This technique is supposed to be of good help for the students to promote their writing ability. Outline in writing is very important because the students are trained to arrange their ideas systematically. They could make the writing easier and faster. There are two kinds of outlines, one of them is a sentence outline which is suggested to be used as a technique of teaching English expository writing to the fourth semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University. Suggested application of using sentence outline to teach writing is a generative activity. The teacher is supposed to select topics. The topic must be based on to the material. The teacher presents the material by distributing the material. The teacher then discusses them in the classroom, and then explains the patterns of the expository writing being taught. Before teaching the material, the teacher asks some questions to trigger their interest. For the follow-up activity, the students are asked to make sentence outline based on the topic given. The teacher corrects it and if it is right the students are then asked. to make composition based on the correct sentence. Finally, the writer realizes that this thesis is far from being perfect. She wishes that there would be another researcher who is willing to continue this study by conducting a field research to see whether or not the technique gives a significance for the teaching of writing.
