  • This study deals with the analysis of the errors made by the third semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University in the use of prepositions in their compositions. The writer chooses this topic because she realizes that there are many students still making prepositions errors when they are writing compositions. The purpose of this study is to identify the preposition errors, that is errors in the use of prepositions of place or position, prepositions of time, prepositions of direction, and prepositions of manner made by the students which are classified into three types of errors, that is errors of addition, errors of omission, and errors of substitution. The writer also interpreted the findings and then gave conclusion and some suggestions to help the students to minimize the errors they would make. To get the data, the writer took the third semester students’ compositions assigned by their writing teachers. After that, she noted down the preposition errors made by the students and then classified them and counted the frequency and the total number of each kind of preposition errors and also the percentage of error occurances. The result shows that the most frequent types of error is error of substitution (= 58,8%), the second is error of addition (= 24,6%), and the least is error of omission (= 16,6%). Finally, the writer gave conclusion and some suggestions, and hopefully these suggestions will give contributions in the teaching of English especially the teaching of writing.
