  • Translation is important for those who are learning English when finding English texts. One of the famous printed media is The Jakarta Post. In that newspaper idioms are often found in the forms of adjective, noun, verb, adverb, and preposition. Idiom is a phrase of words that has special meaning and the meaning cannot be inferred from the words making it up. While, idiomatic expression is a language or sentence that have an idiom as a part of it. The meaning of idiom cannot be guessed from word per word. We can get no-sense or meaningless sentence if translating it literally or word per word. In this study, the writer analyzed difficulties of each category of idiom based on the grammatical formation and the problems caused their inability to translate idioms and idiomatic expressions well. The writer used a test to measure the achievement of respondents in translating idioms and idiomatic expressions. The respondents are the students of 2000, Soegijapranata Catholic University in Semarang. The materials of the test given are taken from a printed media, The Jakarta Post. The writer used qualitative method in analyzing the data. From the data analysis, there are found some difficulties faced by respondents in translating them were found, there were unfamiliarity, picking similar answer to a right answer, using bound translation, cannot match concept or idea between source vii and target language and lack of knowledge about culture of languages. The writer also found a very difficult idiom to translate: adverb.
