  • The Grapes of Wrath is a story about the struggle of the low class people who were poor and oppressed by the rich capitalists that brought in the problems of bankruptcy in the nineteen thirties of America. The Joad’s family was portrayed in The Grapes of Wrath as a representative of the Americans who had to face the collapse of the socio-economic and political system of the era, known as the Great Depression. To analyze the problem of socio-economic and political condition the writer used the sociological approach. To clarify what was actually happening in the nineteen thirties of the Great Depression era, the writer also made use of the historical approach. This thesis founds that people’s selfishness and problems of urbanization had become the main cause of the Great Depression like that exemplified by the Joad family’s life experience.
