  • This study aims to investigate how international students do code switching. There are two participants of this study. They are sisters. The first one is six years old and the younger is five years old. Both of them study in Bina Bangsa Internasional school in Semarang. The data were taken by recording their conversation with the swimming teacher who speaks mixed langauges (Indonesian and English) with them, the conversation with the mother who speaks English, and with the nanny who speaks Indonesian. Based on the data, it is found that the participants are bilingual children as both of them can speak both in Indonesian and English. The matrix language and the embedded language dependson who they talk to. With the mother, the matrix language is English and with the nanny the matrix langauge is Indonesian. While with the swimming teacher the matrix language is mixed. The reasons they do the intersentential code switching because they are used to using the words in English and they do this to show referential meaning as there is lack of knowledge or they do not get the Indonesian words of those words. Meanwhile, they apply intra-sentential code switching to show the affection function and to refer to a certain topic.
