  • Conversation analysis is a study of the talk as social action. This study is an attempt to investigate how turn-taking fills the transaction between 5 sellers and 13 buyers in the traditional market. This study aims to elaborate the machinery of CA that exists in the turn-taking of buyer and seller. The study used a conversational analysis approach where analysis was grounded on the ethnomethodological perspective as a part of qualitative research. This study involved 13 conversations between interactants in traditional market which last approximately 1 until 3 minutes per conversation. Those conversations were analyzed limitedly on the aspects of CA to elaborate four CA machinery: repair, adjacency pairs, overlap, and pause to find out how social action was achieved by the two parties involved in the conversation. The result showed that the four aspects of CA machinery were found in the data with overlap as the most dominant one. The results of the data analysis indicate that buyer and seller should understand the intention of each other to be able to reach social action related to transactional talk.
