  • Nowadays, learning English becomes a necessity from kindergartens to university students. Speaking is one of four important skills in English. However, in learning speaking English, there are many students who always face the challenges. There are two challenges in speaking English. They are internal and external challenges that influenced students in speaking English. This research was conducted in Vocational High School 7 Semarang. The participants of the data were 135 students from 12th grade of nine competency skills. This research was aimed to make students know and understand what the challenges in speaking English that they face when they are inside and outside of class. To analyze the challenges of speaking inside and outside of class, this research used quantitative method. The writer distributed the questionnaires about the challenges in speaking inside and outside of class to collect the quantitative data. Next, to analyze the quantitative data, the writer calculated the participants‟ answer from the questionnaire using descriptive statistics in SPSS to explain the answer from the respondents to find the average and standard deviation. From the analysis, the writer found two kinds of challenges that students faced. They are internal and external factors. First, in the internal factor, the writer found anxiety factors were the biggest challenges in speaking. However, in this research, motivation and self-confidence have a slightly lower mean than anxiety. Second, the external factors that inhibit students improving their speaking were classmates and instructors. However, in the external factors, not only classmates and instructors, there was practices. But, practices have a slightly lower mean than instructors and classmates factor.
