STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF SPEAKING CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

- Activities and materials are crucial in the success of speaking class. This study aims to examine (1) students’ general perception of speaking classroom activities, (2) activities that students preferred the most, and (3) activities that students perceived as the most beneficial for the improvement of students’ speaking skill. This study used both quantitative and qualitative methods. To obtain qualitative data, questionnaires were distributed to examine the attitudes of English-major students towards speaking classroom activities. To gain more in-depth perspectives, the researcher conducted interviews related to students’ perception of speaking activities. The data from the questionnaire and the interviews were then analyzed. The findings of this study suggest that speaking activities should be modified, speaking class should have more credits, and students preferred to choose Role-Play, Describing people or things, and Discussion activities. The significance of this research can help lecturers take students’ perception into consideration while modifying classroom activities for English speaking classes in the future.
