TRANSLATION STRATEGIES APPLIED IN THE LAST SAMURAI MOVIE SUBTITLES

- This research was conducted to investigate the use of translation strategies in a movie subtitle and the quality of a subtitle. The object of this research was The Last Samurai movie script and Indonesian subtitle. The writer uses qualitative method to get data and in his attempt to analyze the work of subtitle translation strategies using Gottlieb’s theory of translation. There are three procedures of investigation. First, the writer watches the movie and reads the subtitle. Second, the writer puts every conversation from the movie subtitle to a table and then analyzes it to find out what translation strategies that the translator used. Third, the writer checks the subtitle quality using standard subtitling criteria. The result of the investigation revealed that the translation strategy which most commonly used by the translator was transfer strategy. The others translation strategies were imitation, deletion, condensation and paraphrase. The writer also concluded that The Last Samurai Movie Subtitle meets the standard subtitling criteria.
