- Recently there are many skin lightening cosmestics that contain dangerous material. One of the natural materials that has been used empirically by Chinese to maintain their skin beauty was edible white birds’ nests. This research aimed to produce edible white birds’ nests lotion with carrageenan as thickening agent and to test its effectiveness as skin lightening cosmetics. The edible white birds’ nests was varied in three concentrations namely 10%, 20%, and 30% to get the optimum concentration as skin lightening agents. The lotions formula contained 0,5% of carrageenan (Lotion A), 0,75% of carrageenan (Lotion B), 1% of carrageenan (Lotion C). Data were analyzed by R.2.14.1 module R-commander program. The optimization test showed that 30% concentration of edible white birds’ nests has the fastest time to enlighten the rats’ skin. Formulation of lotion B showed the best skin lightening effectivity. The physical stability observation of three formula showed the increase of lotions spreadibility and adhesivity, and the decrease of viscosity. The chemical stability observation showed that lotion A was the most stable. The physical and chemical lotions properties that occurred during one month storage was still in the range of the rules that allowed.
