  • This thesis is a descriptive qualitative study on using word stress of the English department of Muhammadiyah Unversity of Purworejo. The aims of the research are to know the students’ mastery on using word stress and to know the causes of error committed by students. The data was taken by recording of pronunciation test. The pronunciation test consists of two types of word stress. They are one stress syllable and two stress syllable. The test consists 40 items. The subject in this research was fourth semester students of English department of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo, there were 40 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used Contrastive Analysis (CA). The result of the study showed that the students’ mastery was very low since the average of mastery is 41.34%. Besides, the causes of error found Interlingual Error and Intralingual Error. Interlingual Error covers goofing and Intralingual Error covers false concept hypothesized, incomplete application of rules and ignorance of rule restriction. The percentage of goofing is 26.19 %, the percentage of false concept hypothesized is 40.47 %, the percentage of incomplete application is 30 %, andthe percentage of ignorance of rule restriction is 3.3 %.
