  • The present study concerns the thermal analysis of oil palm’s empty fruit bunch (EFB) briquette combustion by thermogravimetry. The briquettes are prepared by milling the EFB and compressing it in a cylindrical die. The dimension of the briquettes is 40 mm in diameter and 20 mm long and the density is 650 kg/m3. Combustion is performed in a vertical tube combustor of 100 mm in diameter. The heating rate is approximately 9oC/min. The thermogravimetry (TG) curve shows discernable different phases of thermal decomposition, i.e. preheating and drying, devolatilization, and char oxidation. The initial thermal decomposition temperature takes place at about 110oC. The derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curve is also shown and analyzed in relation to elemental thermal decomposition.
