  • This paper describes the effect of shot peening for stress corrosion cracking in a low carbon steel in sea water environment. The dimension of specimens test for tensile test and corrosion test were provided in according to JIS 2201 and ASTM G39, respectively. The corrosion cracking test was carried out by immersing into ocean water environment,(ASTM D1141). A test results showed that the shot peening process can improve the mechanical properties of the material significantly after the milling process. Whereas from the corrosion test the pitting corrosion is dominantly nucleated at the metal film interface. The specimens of shot peened do not show the significantly effect on attack both the pitting corrosion and the uniform corrosion. The biggest pitting corrosion was occurred under the static loading of 70% for the specimens unpeened. The presence of pitting corrosion promotes stress corrosion cracking. The cracking has the intergranular branched morphology which is typical for chloride cracking of a low carbon steel
