- Hydraulic ram pump is water-pumping device that is powered by falling water. The pump works by using the energy of a large amount of water falls from a small height to lift a small amount of that water to a much greater height. Experiments on ram pump performance have been conducted resulted the pumping height up to 10 times of its supply height. On the other hand the volumetric efficiency is still lower than 30%. The present study is firstly to compare the performance of present ram pump to previous published research result, and secondly to investigate 2 and 3 ram pumps in parallel formation in order to improve the volumetric efficiency. The present result of experiment on single ram pump agreed with the previous research result in term of D’Aubuisson and volumetric efficiencies. The present result also completed design criteria related to ratio of drive pipe length to supply height, L/H. The arrangements of 2 and 3 parallel ram pump can run as well as single ram pump. They increased the actual pumping capacity of ram pump system but failed to improve its volumetric efficiency. Both D’Aubuisson and volumetric efficiency 3 parallel ram pump is lower than 2 parallel ram pump. The frequency of parallel ram pump increased dramatically compared to single ram pump. In order to improve the present study it is suggested to improve the size of delivery valve and the shape of joining section of 2or 3 ram pumps. As observed in this experiment, at this section the flow is hold up and sometimes disturbed the continuity of impuls valve.
