  • Bridge abutments were experience significant displacements during earthquakes. Many researchers have reported collapses of bridge under earthquakes loading, due to large displacement of their abutment. Several investigators have developed 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional displacements models to evaluate the displacement of bridge abutment. However, up to now, the displacements of bridge abutment are not perfectly understood. In this paper, a new 2-dimensional model has been developed. This model is sliding and overturning displacement with considering strain dependent soil stiffness, soil damping, horizontal and vertical time dependent seismic load. The displacements are computed from the static equilibrium position where the seismic backfill force increments are considered for determining the active earth force acting on behind of the abutment wall. This means that the permanent displacement increment occurred if the acceleration acts towards the backfill and the abutment wall moves away from the backfill. The total displacement at the top of bridge abutment is calculated by adding the base-sliding and the overturning displacement. This model is reasonable and considerable advance over the existing solutions. An application of this model is presented.
