- The aim of this research is to know the effectiveness of role playing technique in increasing students’ emotional intelligence of eighth grade of SMP Negeri 18 Surakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. This research is Quasi Experimental Design. The subject of this research are the students of eighth grade of SMP Negeri 18 in the academic year of 2012/2013 who have low emotional intelligence. Those subject got by the value of Q1 and divided into two groups, control group and experiment group which each group composed of 31 students which choosen proportinately according to pre test score. Aggregation of the data in this research use emotional intelligence questionaire that has validated and reliable. Analysis data that use is T-test. The result of the research show the result of T-test is 3,141 with significance value 0,03 means that if compare with table t (df = 60, sig 0,05, t = 1,671) so t counting > t table and level significance 0,05, than 0,03<0,05 so it can be said that there are significant difference between experiment group that accept role playing treatment, with control group that don’t accept role playing treatment, so it can be concluded that The conclusion of this research show that the technique of role playing is effective in increasing students’ emotional intelligence of eighth grade of SMP Negeri 18 Surakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013.
