- This research shows that integration of mediation in Indonesian civil court litigation was highly influenced by the wakai system in Japan. Such an integration was approached due to the successof wakai in reducing court s case load. However, this research discovers that Indonesian court mediation system slightly differs from wakai in Japan. The success rate ofIndonesian court mediation is far below that ofJapan. In order to achieve its initial aim, some steps need to be taken to strengthen court-assisted mediation. These efforts include increasing the awareness ofthe mediators and the parties on the importance ofmediation, and also better equipping the mediators so that they can serve as competent facilitators.Keywords: mediation, wakai.
