  • This quasi-experimental study aimed to determine the influence of contextual approach toward studentâ€TMs mathematical conceptual understanding. Design used in this study was a posttest only control design.The population in this study are all students in 8th Grade of SMPN 3 Batanghari in the academic year 2012/2013 that having low mathematical conceptual understanding. The sample are class VIII.2 and VIII.5 choosed by using purposive random sampling. Data techniques collection uses mathematical conceptual understanding test. Based on the result of hipotesis test, the average of studentâ€TMs mathematical conceptual understanding at class using contextual approach is more than that of using conventional learning in the significant level 5%. So, it was concluded that the contextual approach there influences mathematical conceptual understanding of student.Keywords: contextual approach, mathematical conceptual understanding.
