- [<b>ABSTRAK</b><br> Tesis ini membahas isu identitas gender dalam novel Breakfast on Pluto oleh Patrick McCabe. Dengan menggunakan konsep identitas Stuart Hall sebagai titik tolak, analisis menunjukkan identitas gender berpotensi untuk didekonstruksi, seperti ditunjukkan oleh perubahan identitas yang dilakukan oleh tokoh Patrick Braden. Pemosisian oleh orang lain dan tubuhnya sendiri menjadi halangan bagi proses transformasi identitas Patrick. Namun, teks menunjukkan kedua hal tersebut tidak menghentikan usaha Patrick menjadi perempuan. Ia mempunyai strategi tersendiri dalam membentuk identitas gender yang diinginkannya, yaitu dengan dekonstruksi gender, dekorasi tubuh dan strategi naratif. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa Breakfast on Pluto menawarkan wacana identitas yang dinamis atau fleksibel. Identitas adalah proses menjadi yang akan terus terjadi dalam kehidupan manusia. <hr> <b>ABSTRACT</b><br> The Focus of this study is gender identity in Breakfast on Pluto by Patrick McCabe. By using Stuart HallÂ?s concept of identity, the analysis shows that gender identity has the potential to be deconstructed, as shown by the identity transformation done by Patrick Braden. Positioning by other people and his own body happen to be barriers for his identity transformation. However, those barriers basically cannot stop PatrickÂ?s transformation to be a woman. Patrick has its own strategies in changing his gender identity, which is gender deconstruction, body decoration and language. It can be concluded that Breakfast on Pluto offers a discourse of identity that is dynamic.
