- AbstractThis study aims to describe the politeness strategies used by the debate participants, including positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies, and plans for implementing research results in Indonesian language learning in class IX SMP with discussion text material. This study uses descriptive methods and qualitative research forms in analyzing politeness strategies, namely positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies. The source of this research data is in the form of a public debate between the candidates for the Regent and Deputy Regent of Sambas Regency on November 21, 2020 through the YouTube News PONTV channel. The data in this study are in the form of utterances of debate participants in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in the public debates of the candidates for the Regent and Deputy Regent of Sambas Regency. The results of the research on language politeness strategies used by debate participants in speaking are represented through 11 types of positive politeness strategies and 5 types of negative politeness strategies. Based on the results of the study, positive politeness strategies were more dominantly used by debate participants than negative politeness strategies. The results of the study can be implemented in Indonesian language learning in class IX SMP with discussion text material.
