  • AbstractThis study aimed at finding out the correlation of grammar mastery with students’ writing ability. The data were the scores of grammar and writing assessments collected from the lecturers. The population of this study was Semester -1 Student of English Language Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University Pontianak in Academic Year 2016/2017. The data were analyzed using product moment correlation by Pearson to know the correlation of grammar mastery with writing ability. The results showed that grammar mastery correlated with writing ability (r =0.345). It indicated that the correlation of grammar mastery and writing ability was weak, in which the coefficient was between 0,21 and 0,40. The null hypothesis (HO) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (HA) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a weak correlation of grammar mastery with writing ability. It proved that students who have a bad score in grammar, do not certainly mean to have a bad score in writing and vice versa. Keywords: Correlational Study, Grammar Mastery, Writing Ability.
