Depression amongst interns working in a tertiary care teaching Hospital in Maharashtra

- Background: Internship is a crucial stage of medical school regarding student stress which can affect thepatient care negatively. Retrieving knowledge about presence of depression is therefore important in itself and iffound should be given attention for timely intervention. Aim and objectives: Aim of the study was to assess thelevel of depression amongst medical interns and their correlates. Methodology:The study was carried inGovernment Medical College, Latur, Maharashtra. A total of 75 MBBS interns participated in the study. Datawas gathered by an anonymous self-reporting questionnaire. The first section of the questionnaire focused ondemographic items, habit of any regular exercise/Yoga/meditation every week. The lingual problem incommunication with friends or patients was noted. Attempts for passing each year of MBBS and satisfactionregarding PG entrance result were asked. The degree of depressive symptoms was measured by BeckDepression Inventory (BDI). Data entry and analysis was done on Epi info version 6.0. Descriptive analyseswere performed to investigate the distribution of our data. Results:Amongst the total study subjects 40% weremales and 60% were female interns. Mean age of interns 23.93 years (SD- 1.06 years). Language barrier was aproblem in 6 (8%) students. Majority (88%) of the interns were hostelite. Majority of the students had passedthe examinations in 1st attempt. Only 17 (22.67%) of them were satisfied with the result of postgraduateentrance examination.About 16% of the interns had symptoms of depression. Dissatisfaction with postgraduateentrance examination result was significantly associated with development of depression, while regular physicalexercise was found to be protective for development of depression. Conclusions: Prevalence of depression was16% among the interns. Dissatisfaction with postgraduate entrance examination result was a risk factor whileregular physical exercise was found to be protective for depression.
