Developing Character Based Big Book as a Media for Teaching English at Sixth Grade Students of Elementary School at SD Lab UNDIKSHA Singaraja

  • Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengembangkan big book berbasis karakter sebagai media dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk kelas VI SD di SD Lab UNDIKSHA Singaraja, dan (2) mengetahui kualitas dari big book berbasis karakter yang dikembangkan. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 32 siswa kelas VI SD di SD Lab UNDIKSHA Singaraja. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari lembar observasi, panduan wawancara, kuesioner, ceklis, rubric, dan catatan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan yang mengikuti prosuder pengembangan berdasarkan model pengembangan Sugiyono yaitu identifikasi potensi dan masalah, pengumpulan data, desain produk, validasi desain, revisi desain, uji coba produk, dan revisi produk. Sehingga, pada akhir penelitian dihasilkan prototipe dari big book berbasis karakter. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis big book berbasis karakter yang dikembangkan dengan tema seasons, tourism, direction, airport, dan transportation. Masing-masing big book terdiri dari 14 sampai 15 halaman dan mengandung pembelajaran karakter di dalam ceritanya. Berdasarkan kualitas media, ditemukan bahwa big book berbasis karakter yang dikembangkan dikategorikan sebagai meida yang sangat bagus. Sehingga, media big book berbasis karakter ini cocok digunakana sebagai media dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk kelas VI SD.Kata Kunci : big book, pendidikan karakter, pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak This research aimed to (1) develop character based big book as a media for teaching English at sixth grade students at SD Lab UNDIKSHA Singaraja, and (2) find out the quality of character based big book developed. The subject of this research was thirty-two students of sixth grade students of elementary school at SD Lab UNDIKSHA Singaraja. The data of this research were obtained by using observation sheet, interview guide, item of questionnaire, checklist, rubric, and notes. This research was R & D (research and development) which followed several procedures based on Sugiyono model namely identifying potency and problem, collecting data, designing product, validating design product, revising design product, trying-out product, and revising product. Thus, there was a prototype product of character based big book in the end of this research. The result of this research showed that there were five kinds of character based big book developed with the theme seasons, tourism, direction, airport, and transportation. Each big book consisted of fourteen up to fifteen pages and was inserted character education in its story. For the quality of the media, it was found that the character based big book developed was categorized as excellent media. Thus, it was proper to be used as a media for teaching English at sixth grade students.keyword : big book, character education, teaching English for young learners
