- Talk given at Wellcome Reproducibility, Replicability and Trust in Science (Virtual Conference), September 2020. Abstract: The University of Oxford Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) was established in 2017 to accelerate the translation of research and innovation between the laboratory use of Neuroimaging and human health use. One of WIN’s core themes is to develop both the infrastructure and culture to support ‘open neuroimaging’ among its 250+ members. The first stage of this program has been to develop the infrastructure necessary to support researchers in sharing their data, data acquisition methodology, experimental tools and analysis code, in an open, transparent and reproducible manner. As these stages near completion, we are entering the second phase of work to build awareness, provide training and increase uptake in the use of this infrastructure. This stage will involve building a community of expert users and “Ambassadors” of the WIN Open Neuroimaging Project. The WIN Open Neuroimaging Ambassadors will be actively engaged to: (1) provide feedback on and contribute to the future infrastructure development; (2) develop policies, incentives and governance recommendations to promote open research practices; (3) identify barriers to working open and devising strategies to remove these barriers for ourselves and others; (4) build a community of researchers with the expertise and confidence to promote open research practices their own labs and wider community. This mode of community engagement is based on the Mozilla Open Leadership Framework which promotes open and inclusive participation, understanding and sharing by design, to mobilise the community, solve shared problems and achieve shared goals. We will also apply The Mountain of Engagement community growth model, which aims to empower members of the community with development opportunities and support from first discovery of the project into sustained participation and leadership. This presentation will provide an overview of the existing and continued open infrastructure development at WIN, and layout our plans and successes in community engagement following the principles outlined above.
