From North Carolina to Texas, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Surinam, and Brazil (from Pará to Rio Grande do Sul) (Melo 2003). Ecological notes. Freshwater species. In turbid, generally slow waters, with abundant marginal vegetation, and muddy substratum. Sometimes found in brackish waters (Melo 2003). Previous records in Bahia. von Ihering (1897) (as Palaemon acanthurus), Sawaya (1946), Holthuis (1952), Almeida et al. (2006).
