- The first decade of VISTA observations of the Magellanic Clouds has focused on the acquisition of deep near-infrared images, to study the history and spatial distribution of their stellar populations. While we still hope to profit of the exquisite VISTA camera to unveil unprecedented details about our neighbouring galaxies, preparations to exploit the multi-fibre spectrograph 4MOST, that will succeed the camera, are well underway. In this presentation, I will highlight the strengths of the VISTA imaging data, introducing the 5th data release of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), and I will describe future plans to complement this data with spectra, from which to measure the abundance of elements and radial velocity of half a million stars, over the next decade.
