  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women and is known to be a broadly global problem. One of the methods of breast cancer detection is the mammographic examination that aims to detect breast cancer at an early and yet curable stage. Contrast enhancement and brightness preservation in digital mammograms are very important issues for early detection and further diagnosis of breast cancer. The following study proposes to apply the sigmoid function to a mammographic image bank, to analyze the behavior of the parameters and properties of this function on contrast enhancement. Twenty-seven Inbreast image bank images were used for the application of the sigmoid function by two methods: automatic and manual, which have their gain and cutoff values pre-established from a maximum threshold found by Chebychev's Inequality Theorem. Following the proposed by Chebyshev's Inequality Theorem, we have the gain values for all images to be 7.43 and for cutoff to 0.7555. The statistical analysis performed by Friedman's test on the original image sets, processed by the automatic method and by the manual method reveals that the images are significantly different considering their descriptive statistics. The sigmoid function is thus relevant to the enhancement of contrast in mammograms
