- The author makes reference to his 2019 book on the early relations between the Italian peninsula and North America in order to show the significance of Genoa and the Genoese. He describes the activities of Stefano Ceronio, a secret agent for the American revolutionaries in the West Indies and later a merchant in Philadelphia. What we know of Giovanni Rati, another entrepreneur of Genoese origin, also shows the extent of his familiarity with matters American. The known Genoa arrivals and departures of American ships are recalled, together with the presence in the city of some real of fictitious Americans. The chapter ends with the list of the American consuls and consular personnel in Genoa (1790-1818).
