- The ultrasculpture (represented by microtubercles) of the surface of the crown of acanthodian scales belonging to Acanthodiformes? indet and Cheiracanthus aff. C. latus from the Eifelian and Givetian deposits of Leningrad Region, Russia is described. The crystallite arrangement in acanthodian enameloid is described for the first time. The microstructure of this hypermineralized tissue appears to have similarities with that of “sponge-like” ganoin of Cheirolepis trailli, described by Richter and Smith (1995). In general, microstructure of enameloid of the studied acanthodian scales seem to be close to that of ganoin of Actinopterygii.
