The correlation between parts of speech mastery and writing achievement of the Tenth Grade Students of MAN 2 Palembang

  • This research is aimed at describing the correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and their achievement in writing skill. The method used in this research is correlational research. The population of the research is the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Palembang in the 2017/2018 academic year. There are 330 students from five classes as the population in this research. The sample was taken by using convenience sampling which consist of 96 students. Furthermore there are two variables in this research. The first one is students’ parts of speech mastery (variable X) and the second is writing achievement (variable Y). The students’ parts of speech mastery score was taken from the multiple choices questions whereas the student’ writing achievement was taken from scoring based on experts’ judgements. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the r- obtained (.293) was higher than r-table (.200). then the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was .443. It means that p (.004) was lower than .05. Thus, null hypothesis (H 0 ) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. From the research finding, it can be concluded that there was significant correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and their writing achievement. The R-square also showed .083 which means students’ parts of speech mastery are likely to contribute and to affect writing achievement. Keywords: Parts of Speech Mastery, Writing Achievement
