THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THINKING STYLES AND WRITING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF MAN 1 PALEMBANG

  • The objectives of this study are (1) to find out whether or not there is a significant correlation between thinking style and writing achievement of the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Palembang, and (2) to know if students’ thinking styles influence their writing achievement. In this study, 248 students of the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Palembang in academic year 2016-2017 became the population of this study. 87 students became the samples of this study by means of purposive sampling technique. The method used in this study was a correlational study. The data were collected by using a questionnaire and a writing test. Pearson product moment correlation was applied in this study. The analysis was continued using multiple regression to find out the contribution of sub variables of thinking styles to the students’ writing achievement. The results showed that (1) there was a weak correlation between thinking styles and writing achievement (r-table .208, <.05), but there was no significant between thinking styles and writing achievement (sig.2tailed was .022, <.05). (2) there was significant influence between thinking styles and writing achievement (R2 was .108) of the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Palembang.
