  • A multifunctional probe is developed by B. Liu and co-workers on page 659 for selective fluorescence imaging and photodynamic killing of both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria over mammalian cells. Based on its aggregation-induced emission and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer characteristics, the probe is weakly emissive in aqueous solution, but shows intense fluorescence upon binding to negatively charged bacterial membranes. The antibacterial activity arises from both the dark-toxicity and the phototoxicity under white light irradiation.
