  • The book “Ondo State Non-Governmental Organizations: Activities Up-date” is the first edition of its kind. Its aim is encapsulated in the vision, mission and goals, to provide succour to the needy and the less privileged, in the state. The authors of the book have realized that for too long, government and governmental agencies have dominated the scope of human activities in the country. This is in spite of the fact that much as public administration deals with the science of getting things done in the most efficient ways in the public domain; Non-Governmental Organizations have of recent proved more or less effective, in comparative terms to government bureaucracy. Our checkered history of nation-nationhood in the indices of development has shown grave impunity, frustration and bad governance by all regimes that piloted the leadership of this great nation. Civilian and military leaders, instead of evolving people-oriented policies, only engaged in cut-throat struggle for leadership and self-aggrandizement. The results have only led to underdevelopment, diversion of taxpayer’s, money and God endowed resources, corruption and mismanagement of public funds. These, and other factors, invariably call for an alternative form of managing people and resources-‘the non-governmental organizations’. The monumental failure of past and present governments have, therefore, inspired the proliferation of the afore-mentioned organizations in the state to ease the sufferings of vulnerable groups and the gullible, to liberate themselves from exploitation and deprivation by greedy political thugs. In Ondo State, which is the focus of this discourse, concerned groups and charity organizations, have, since set the pace to change the stats-quo of what Karl Marx calls ‘dialectical materialism’ in the management and distribution of resources among the citizenry. The success story is evident as perusing through the chapters reveals huge achievements demonstrated in print and live pictures. This success is not surprising, given the prosperous, industrial and educational advancement of people of the state since its inception in 1976. The book is concisely written in simple language and expressions for students, teachers, government functionaries, corporate bodies, diplomats, individuals and the general public to share their new experience and knowledge for national development. Finally, I most graciously thank the management of Science and Education Development Institute, for giving me this special privilege to review and provide the introductory chapter to this impressive documentary. This have amply demonstrated the zeal for contribution to knowledge in an era when, the country yearns for patriotic academics, and industrialists to move the down trodden me land asses of tout of socio-economic quagmire.
