  • The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) requests the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) to assess welfare risks in the current legislation for the keeping of turkeys. The NFSA emphasizes welfare challenges in Norwegian turkeys kept for meat production. Production limits in turkey farms are now to be increased, implying larger farm units and higher numbers of animals. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has therefore asked the NFSA to evaluate the legislation in order to secure animal welfare aspects. On this occasion, the NFSA has asked VKM to provide an assessment of welfare risks in turkeys kept in accordance with the current legislation.
