- While the ζ-potential is regarded as the difference of potential between the slipping plane and the interior of the solution, the potential of the Stern-Mukherjee layer (Mukherjee, Disc.. Faraday Soc., 1911, 16, 103; Stern, Z. Elekgrochem., 1924, 30, 508) may be regarded as that between the capillary surface and the slipping plane and should be denoted by (\(\Psi\)o - \(\zeta\) ) where \(\Psi\)o is the Nernst or surface potential.
