  • While pitting under field exposure has been observed to be many times greater than that occurs in the corrosion cell for a particular combination of soil and ferrous material, the electrode in the corrosion cell suffers a much higher weight loss compared to that found under the field conditions. The difference in the physical and chemical characteristics of soils of four major Indian soil groups does not seem to be reflected in the corrosivity of the latter fur cast iron and mild steel.
