- Apis (Apis) mellifera Linnaeus Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758: 576. Refer to Engel (1999a) for complete synonymy. GD: Cosmopolitan; present on most or all of the islands of Greater Puerto Rico, except Mona Island. The domestic honey bee, introduced from Europe by colonists in the 17 th century (Engel 1999a), has colonized Puerto Rico for a long time. According to Ledru (1863) and Gundlach (1887), the species was already well established in the island’s non-cultivated habitats.
