- Arithmetic seems to be a perfectly adequate and complete system when ignoring 0. For any number except 0 could be divided, any number except 0 can similarly have a multiplicative inverse. Now it begs to question - what is so special about 0 that allows it to elude such basic arithmetic properties? Are these axioms and restrictions on 0 actually necessary? Or is there a way to broaden arithmetic in order to validate them?
