  • Ferric-1-hydroxy xanthone system has been reinvestigated with a view to determine its suitability for spectrophotometric determination of iron (III). It has been found that between pH range 1.0 to 3.0, iron (III) forms only 1: 1 complex with ligand, while earlier workers had reported the formation of 1 :2 complex under these conditions. The optical density of the solution does not remain constant within any pH range and the method is, therefore, not suitable for spectrophotometric determination of iron as recommended by earlier workers. The equilibrium constant (KI*) of the complex has been found to be 44.2.
