  • Departments of Chemistry (Physical) and Physics, Jadavpur University, Calcutta-32 Received 4 September 1972 A systematic spectral study of the aggregation characteristics of halofluorescein dyes has been carried out with a view to understanding the mechanism of dye aggregation. The absorption spectra of fluorescein and some of its halogen derivatives have been obtained as a function of concentration. Their monomer spectra have been compared and the effect of substitution of polarizable halogen atoms has been analysed. In concentrated solutions the dyes dimerize. The dimerization constants (K) of these dyes are reported. The values of K in three solvents, namely, water, ethanol and glycerol have been studied and attempts have been made to correlate these values. The thermodynamic parameters are calculated and they are observed to reveal some interesting problems involved in the process of dimerization.
