  • Department of Chemistry, University of Jodhpur, Jodhpur (India) Manuscript received 9 May 1977, revised 17 June 1977, accepted 4 July 1977 The oxidation of leucine by metaperiodic acid has been studied. The rate was found to be directly proportional to the concentration of leucine as well as metaperiodic acid. The effect of temperature showed that the Arrhenlus equation Is valid in this case. The values or the energy of activation, entropy or activation and free energy of activation have been found to be 24.8 K. cals./mole, 2.6 e s u. and 23.9 K. cals/mole respectively. Studies on the effect of pH showed that the rate constant Increases wlth Increasing pH. The probable reactive species are \(H_{3}IO^-_{6} \) and leucine Ions. A suitable mechanism has been proposed for the reaction.
