- Department of Pure Chemistry, Calcutta University, Calcutta 9 Manuscript received 23 June 1972; revised 18 September 1972; accepted 26 De ember 1972 On the basis of a new mode of approach, equations have been deduced to account for the osmotic pressure of sols of gum arable under conditions in which the concentration of the gum and that of the diffusible electrolytes added to the system are varied. The equations have been found to agree well with the experimental data. The deduction of the equations involves an interpretation of the Dolman theory of membrane equilibrium somewhat different from that offered so far. It has been shown that when the sol is dilute, so that the average distance between the surfaces of two neighbouring particles is quite large compared to the thickness of the electrical double layer surrounding them and the potential in the intermicellar liquid due to the double layers is zero, then the activity of each kind of diffusible ions in the intermicellar liquid is equal to the activity of the same kind of ions in the outer chamber containing the aqueous solution of the diffusible ions only.
