University of Baroda, Baroda-2 (Manuscript received 12 July 1972; accepted 10 November 1972) 2-Methyl-9-oxo-9H-furo(2,3-c)benzopyran is synthesised from 3-hydroxycoumarin by allylation, Claisen migration, acetylation, bromination and cyclisation with alcoholic potassium hydroxide. 7-Methoxy-2-methyl-9-oxo-911-2,3-dihydrofuro(2,3-c)benzopyran and 6-bromo-2-methyl-9-oxo9H-2,3-dihydrofuro(2,3-c)benzopyran are also synthesised but attempts to dehydrogenate these with palladised charcoal met with failure.
