- 37. Patagonian Dwarf Bonneted Bat Eumops patagonicus French: Eumope de Patagonie / German: Patagonien-Bulldogfledermaus / Spanish: Eumops de la Patagonia Taxonomy. Eumops patagonicus Thomas, 1924, “ Buenos Ayres [= Buenos Aires],” Argentina. Eumops patagonicus was previously considered a subspecies of E. bonariensis but is distinguished by morphological and molecular differences. Monotypic. Distribution. S Peru, Bolivia, S Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and extreme NW Uruguay. Descriptive notes. Head—body 54-74 mm, tail 27-43 mm, ear 18-23 mm, hindfoot 7-11 mm, forearm 40-47 mm; weight 7-16 g. See general characteristics of the genus under the Black Bonneted Bat (E. auripendulus). Dorsal pelage of the Patagonian Dwarf Bonneted Bat is grayish or reddish brown, with hairs having whitish bases. Ventral pelage is paler, with hairs having dark brown or lighter bases and grayish tips. Keel of earis thin andjust reaches anterior margin of antitragus. Tragusis short and wide. Habitat. Chaco thorn scrub, Yungas forests, and urban areas. Food and Feeding. The Patagonian Dwarf Bonneted Bat is an insectivore. Breeding. In Paraguay, Patagonian Dwarf Bonneted Bats were pregnant in September—-October; reproductively inactive females were found inJanuary and April-August. Activity patterns. Patagonian Dwarf Bonneted Bats are common in disturbed areas and near human habitation. They have been found roosting under roofs and in tree hollows and netted near and over water in Paraguay.
