- Chemistry Department, University of Jodhpur, Jodhpur. Manuscript received 22 February 1973 ; accepted 11 December 1973 The electric dipole moment of Benzyl mercaptan has been determined at 30° in two nonpolar solvents \(viz \). benzene and dioxane. Our data in both the solvents are new as no one appears to have studied the dielectric polarisation of Benzyl mercaptan earlier1. In previous communications2'8, we have already shown the merits of Palit equation. It is observed that the moment value (μs) obtained by this equation is fairly comparable with those calculated by the methods due to Guggenheim4 and Halverstadt and Kumler5 usually employed by the workers. The molecular polarisation data in dioxane indicate that the probability of formation of charge transfer type complexes is better indicated than dipole association in the solution.
