It is now known that pure clays like H-clays exist as partially substituted clays such as Al-H-clays etc. Hence a classification of kaolinite, bentonite or illite in partially substituted conditions can be established by a study of the dissociation constants of clay samples. Multiple dissociation consĀtants are obtained, and a critical study of their values, leads to clay classification.
