Reactions of active methylene compounds (A — CH2 —B, where A=COOC2H5, CONH2, CN2COCH2, and B =CN,COCH3, COOC2H5) with open-chain cojugated nitrones (X-C6H4CH=CH-CH=(O) C6H4 -Y, where X = H, o—NO2, and Y=H, p CH3, p—Cl), have been described. Unlike some of the previous reports, these nitrones have been observed to yield only the addition elimination products I and II.
