- Chemicol Laboratories, University of Allahabad, Allahabad-211002 Manuscript received 10 August 1976, accepted 20 January 1977 Stepwise formation constants of 8-azaguanine (AGN) chelates with the metal ions, Be(ll), AI(III) Cr(III) Ni(ll) Cu(ll) Pb(ll) and UO2(VI) have been evaluated at various ionic strengths employing pH-metric technique at 30° in an aqueous media; Thermodynamic values of the formation constants were obtained by extrapolation to zero ionic strength. The stepwise thermodynamic equilibrium constants are : KH1 = 1010.23, KH2= 106.45 for H+; and K1 = 107.93, K2 = 106.40 for Be(ll); K1 = 1018.18, K2 = 108.06, K3 = 106.26 for Al(III); K1 = 109.04, K2 = 106.86 for Cr(III); K1 = 108.44 for Ni(ll); K1 = 1012·10 for Cu(ll); K1 = 106.70 for Pb(ll); and K1 = 1010.18 for UO2(VI) systems. 8-Azaguanine is structurally related to the purine, adenine, thioguanine, 6-mercaptopurine etc., which are less effective as anticancer agents than AGN. The stabilities of its metal chelates are also higher, which have been
