Manuscript received 30 August 1976, revised 17 March 1977, accepted 11 April 1977 1-p-Bromophenyl-5-benzyloxy-2 phenylindole was synthesised by the Nenitzescu method and converted to various N-substituted 1-p-tromophenyl-5-benzyloxy·2-phenyltryptamines. Attempts to debenzylate tbe above tryptamincs by hydrogenation with Pd/C gave the corresponding 5-hydroxy-l,l·diphenyl-N-substituted trypiamines resulting from debromination during the process.Similar debromination with ethyl 1-p-bromophenyl-5- bydroxy-2-phenylindole-3-carhoxylate and its 4-dimcthylamlno derivative is reported.
